Although Philip Barlow works within a long tradition of landscape painting, his depiction of the ‘seen’ landscape is simply a vehicle through which he navigates territory of another nature, one where the line between the physical and the spiritual realm has seemingly been removed. These scenarios are not, however, intended to be of a surreal nature, and the artist’s wish is that they will seem curiously familiar and convincingly real.
Philip has held many solo exhibitions, including at Obert Contemporary and the Association of Visual Arts in Johannesburg, and at Johans Borman Fine Art and Everard Read in Cape Town. He has participated in group exhibitions both locally and abroad, including in the USA, Greece and Holland, and has pieces in the corporate collections of Bowman Gilfillan in Johannesburg and Nando’s in London.
Philip holds a diploma in graphic fine art from Port Elizabeth Technikon (now Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University).
