Riaan van Zyl
Riaan van Zyl pushes the boundaries of contemporary art, and classical techniques and concepts. He takes his primary inspiration from commonplace, ordinary ideas and his perception of things around him, effectively capturing their fascination and value with a deconstructed eye. At first glance his work may look abstract but closer investigation reveals a very personal syntax, punctuation and orchestration, with each piece becoming almost a performance of movement rather than a standard drawing.
Riaan has exhibited internationally and locally in over 28 solo and numerous group exhibitions, with his work has sold into some of the most prestigious art collections in the world. His 2016 series, ‘quintessence • kwinˈtesəns’, was part of two solo shows in Cape Town and Riebeek Kasteel, while a more recent series, ‘machinery • məˈʃiːn(ə)ri’, showed in Hermanus.
Riaan’s 2017 body of work, ‘ambiguity • ambɪ'ɡjuːɪti’, focuses on the duplicity of movement and the interaction between artist and viewer.
