I am an experimental ceramicist and use porcelain as a medium. I create sculptural pieces and seldom glaze my work, preferring the high fired honesty of bone white porcelain. Pushing porcelain to its limits is a challenge I enjoy, the thrill of waiting for the piece to dry and survive the kiln firing.
My studio is in Melkbos Strand, West Coast, and this harsh but beautiful environment is a constant source of inspiration.
I collect organic elements wherever I can (plants, leaves, beach finds, feathers) and these elements I cast in plaster and make into press molds. Very often the most unexpected leaf shape, seed pod or piece of kelp reveals beautiful textures and shapes. I then combine press molded and hand formed porcelain shapes to form new organic sculptures. I love the unexpected results when fragile porcelain elements marry together to form a new collection of fossil-like elements, meshed together. Nature with all its fragility is bursting with energy, life and texture. . . layer upon layer of evolution and growth. I hope to entice the viewer into my visual world.
