Tiaan van Deventer
Tiaan van Deventer is a multi-disciplinary artist with analogue photography being his primary medium of expression. His art is first and foremost an investigation into the subconscious dystopian state of the human mind. He explores this theme by means of framing paradoxical symbols and subject matter onto photographic emulsion. He captures unseen; almost Surrealist situations onto film, paper or canvas. His art is also form of self-expression where the act of making supersedes the subject matter of the art.
His creative approach to his subject matter is grounded in reality; with an almost documentary style with a twist approach to his imagery often focusing his lens on disenfranchised communities and individuals. He received the prestigious Vuleka competition Conrad Theys 1st prize for his project “Die Uitgewerptes” which documents homeless Afrikaner men caught up in the battle of drug addiction.
His work is part of private and public collections in various countries, including the UK, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and South Africa.
His latest project entails the construction and operation of arguably the largest camera obscura in the Southern hemisphere; at AfrikaBurn in the Tankwa Karoo and elsewhere.
It will be featured at this years event titled OBSCURA.
